ABSTRACT

Multimedia is a diversified and powerful means to strengthen and aid the education methodology, by making learning interactive and interesting, this paper further justifies the same. The Internet acts as a gateway between multimedia producers and consumers. It is free from discipline boundaries. Several tools allow nontechnical educators to deal with diverse multimedia to create the learning material. These tools should stand fit some parameters, briefly discussed. Its employment is rapidly magnifying, enabling self-learning, which was boosted in the Covid era. This paper emphasizes on to prevent traditional teaching from being used as a supplement but should be primary. ABSTRACT

In spite of its increasing popularity, distance education faces challenges -- levels of digital literacy, access to technology, workload and time management, students' feelings of isolation and disconnection -- that can have a significant impact on the experience of the learners. In addressing these issues, we propose a pedagogical model for distance learning which promotes the synergy of eight ingredients -- Community, Openness, Multimodality, Participation, Personalisation, Learning, Experience, Technological-Enhancement, with their initial letters generating the acronym COMP-PLETE -- for the shaping of a highly participatory online learning experience and the creation of an active and cohesive community characterised by a strong sense of commitment towards the learning of the individuals and that of the group. This paper presents the theoretical rationale for and implementation of COMP-PLETE. It also provides recommendations for researchers and practitioners interested in cultivating an online learning community which responds well to the aforementioned challenges posed by distance education.

ABSTRACT

Currently, the volume of sensitive content on the Internet, such as pornography and child pornography, and the amount of time that people spend online (especially children) have led to an increase in the distribution of such content (e.g., images of children being sexually abused, real-time videos of such abuse, grooming activities, etc.). It is therefore essential to have effective IT tools that automate the detection and blocking of this type of material, as manual filtering of huge volumes of data is practically impossible. The goal of this study is to carry out a comprehensive review of different learning strategies for the detection of sensitive content available in the literature, from the most conventional techniques to the most cutting-edge deep learning algorithms, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each, as well as the datasets used. The performance and scalability of the different strategies proposed in this work depend on the heterogeneity of the dataset, the feature extraction techniques (hashes, visual, audio, etc.) and the learning algorithms. Finally, new lines of research in sensitive-content detection are presented.

ABSTRACT

Especially since the Covid-19 pandemic when teachers might have found or created videos for students to watch, flipped classroom methodology has interested many secondary-level chemistry teachers. However, as the secondary coauthor teachers here found, most of the research on the effectiveness of flipped classroom methodology has been performed at the collegiate level. To help fill this gap, six high school teachers from different schools present their research and experience with flipped classroom methodologies in their classes. Taken as a collective, their research, aligning with previous research, suggests that there likely will not be gains on exam scores or course grades for high school students when a classroom is "flipped”, but there are other positive reasons that flipped classroom methodology might be a useful tool in the secondary-level chemistry classroom. © 2023 American Chemical Society and Division of Chemical Education, Inc.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is preventable with screening, yet remains the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. Nationally, CRC screening substantially declined during the COVID-19 pandemic and is underutilized by ethnic minorities and in safety-net systems. Therefore, City of Hope partnered with Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and community and faithbased organizations to improve CRC screening among medically underserved communities. METHOD(S): Between October 2020 and October 2022, we implemented a multi-component intervention that included community outreach and education (a multi-ethnic multimedia campaign and community training adapted from the NCI Screen2Save (S2S) program) and clinic-based interventions (provider/staff training and patient education). Intervention reach and training participant surveys were assessed. Within our four FQHC sites, we also compared clinic-level CRC screening rates among age-eligible patients before (June 2021) and after implementation of the clinic-based intervention (June 2022). RESULT(S): Our reach assessment showed that our multi-ethnic multimedia campaign reached 35.4 million impressions, our S2S education training reached 300 diverse community members, and our provider/staff training reached 150 medical providers. Among the 100 providers surveyed, >80% felt confident they could get their patients to complete their CRC screening test and follow-up care. For the clinic-based intervention component, our baseline sample included 11,259 age-eligible patients across the four FQHC sites. Overall CRC screening rates increased from 45% to 52% before vs. after the intervention implementation period. The site with the highest CRC screening rate (>62%) maintained steady rates over the observation period, whereas three sites with lower baseline rates showed greater pre-post improvements (average 15 percentage-point increase). CONCLUSION(S): An overall increase in CRC screening rates was achieved across FQHCs, despite clinic staffing challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Intervention implementation is ongoing with attempts to document individual, clinic improvements by race/ethnicity.

The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on the educational system all over the world. As a result, the educational institutions have to solely rely on online method of delivering education in the form of e-lectures, e-presentations and webinars. Elearning has been defined as "an educational method that facilitates learning by the application of information technology and communication providing an opportunity for learners to have access to all the required education programmes."1 The term e-learning has been interchangeably used with the terms web-based learning, online learning or education, computer-assisted or -aided instruction, computer-based instruction, internet based learning, multimedia learning, technology-enhanced learning and virtual learning.2,3 All the institutions are striving to best deliver the content online to engage students effectively and to conduct timely assessments for them. It has led to accelerated development of online learning environment so that learning would not be hindered. Online Learning Management Systems (LMS) are web-based software for distributing, tracking, and managing courses over the Internet. These systems offer an effective solution to deliver the learning content effectively and establish a two-way communication between the faculty and students.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, virtual reality (VR) has gradually entered the daily education and teaching activities from pure scientific research. In the area of assistance teaching, some typical computer softwares still play some important roles. This makes remote teaching activities can just learn voice, yet cannot possess the feeling of realistic existence. Especially in scenario of COVID-19, remote teaching activities with proper perceptibility are in urgent demand. To deal with the current challenge, this paper proposes a wireless VR-based multimedia-assisted teaching system framework under mobile edge computing networks. In this framework, cooperative edge caching and adaptive streaming based on viewport prediction are adopted to jointly improve the quality of experience (QoE) of VR users. First, we investigated the resource management problem of caching and adaptive streaming in this framework. Considering the complexity of the formulated problem, a distributed learning scheme is proposed to solve the problem. The experimental data are verified and the experimental results prove that the studied methods improve the performance of user QoE. ABSTRACT

The integration of digital technology into healthcare is critical for health communication. This study analyzed a group of nursing students who applied multimedia health education e-books to different groups of varying sizes to explore the efficiency of implementing health communication and nursing information literacy in the nursing industry. If medical personnel can make appropriate use of technology, combine medical operations with information systems, and disseminate the purpose of health to groups of different sizes properly, the quality of patient care will improve. Thirty-two junior nursing students at the college level were divided into three groups, each subject to a 3-week internship. After the internship, a questionnaire survey was conducted. Additionally, nine nursing students were interviewed in a 45-min semistructured format. Regarding the effectiveness of nursing students using multimedia e-books to implement health communication and the development of nursing information literacy, the statistical analysis results demonstrated no significant differences between large groups and small groups. However, their 5-point Likert scale average values were all greater than 4, indicating that regardless of group size, their feedback on using e-books was positive. This means multimedia e-books can effectively help nursing students practice health communication application effectiveness and develop nursing information literacy.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this research is to describe the use of telemedicine applied to patients characterised by a particular state of illness, which often drives them toward a frail and chronic status, in a systematic manner. This work employed the Tranfield approach to carry out a systematic literature review (SLR), in order to provide an efficient and high-quality method for identifying and evaluating extensive studies. The methodology was pursued step by step, analysing keywords, topics, journal quality to arrive at a set of relevant open access papers that was analysed in detail. The same papers were compared to each other and then, they were categorised according to significant metrics, also evaluating technologies and methods employed. Through our systematic review we found that most of the patients involved in telemedicine programs agreed with this service model and the clinical results appeared encouraging. Findings suggested that telemedicine services were appreciated by patients, they increased the access to care and could be a better way to face emergencies and pandemics, lowering overall costs and promoting social inclusion.Copyright © 2022 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this essay is to demonstrate the significant function played by theatres during the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland. It examines three pandemic projects created by fringe theatre companies and individual performers in Poland that address political and social questions, such as women's reproductive rights, excessive government control over private lives, and the social exclusion of disabled and immigrant communities: Arti Grabowski's Improvised Lecture, Usta Usta Republika Theatre's Embassy 2.0, and Adam Ziajski and Scena Robocza's Don't Tell Anyone: The Quarantine. The essay traces how these artists rediscovered the new relevance of earlier work and explored the potential of multimedia practices to reach larger or different audiences. Its discussion is grounded in Antonin Artaud's concept of theatre as the plague and Susan Neiman's perspective of "corona as chance," whereby emphasizing the major alteration of perspective and commitment to change brought about or facilitated by the pandemic.

ABSTRACT

The combination of pervasive sensing and multimedia understanding with the advances in communications makes it possible to conceive platforms of services for providing telehealth solutions responding to the current needs of society. The recent outbreak has indeed posed several concerns on the management of patients at home, urging to devise complex pathways to address the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in combination with the usual diseases of an increasingly elder population. In this paper, we present TiAssisto, a project aiming to design, develop, and validate an innovative and intelligent platform of services, having as its main objective to assist both Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) multi-pathological patients and healthcare professionals. This is achieved by researching and validating new methods to improve their lives and reduce avoidable hospitalisations. TiAssisto features telehealth and telemedicine solutions to enable high-quality standards treatments based on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Three hundred patients are involved in our study: one half using our telehealth platform, while the other half participate as a control group for a correct validation. The developed AI models and the Decision Support System assist General Practitioners (GPs) and other healthcare professionals in order to help them in their diagnosis, by providing suggestions and pointing out possible presence or absence of signs that can be related to pathologies. Deep learning techniques are also used to detect the absence or presence of specific signs in lung ultrasound images. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 has impacted education in innumerable ways at all levels. For institutions of higher education, budgetary deficits, fluctuating enrollments and personnel decisions have come to the fore, galvanizing efforts to expand education to diverse student audiences, including online curricular portfolios. Developing digital materials for learning purposes, or e-learning materials, is not as straightforward as it may seem. The traditional approach is multimedia instruction, the presentation of both pictures and words in an e-learning format to foster learning. However, multimedia instruction, to develop meaningful learning, needs to support the active processing of the learner who engages with those materials. The Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML) informs the development of effective multimedia e-learning materials. However, given the dearth of CTML studies directed at students of diverse and underrepresented populations, such as d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing students (DHH), it is unclear as to the extent that CTML principles may inform effective multimedia instruction for this group. We recruited DHH students to view an asynchronous, online multimedia tutorial covering foundational chemistry concepts applicable to biochemistry and to complete a brief questionnaire that inquired about their e-learning perspectives. A mixed-methods approach was used to characterize responses. Students characterized their use of the tutorial's features as broadly serving three different functions and also placed a strong emphasis on the benefits of the accessibility features. These findings have implications for the applicability of at least one CTML principle for this student population. At the same time, DHH students both perceived learning benefits from tutorial features and suggested additional improvements to the tutorial that invoke other CTML principles. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The primary aim of undergraduate, pre-registration nursing education is to prepare students to be nurses who can apply theory to practice, with clinical placements to support the practice element of the clinical programme. However, the theory-practice gap is a longstanding problem within nurse education, as nurses continue to practise with incomplete knowledge to support their actions. PROBLEM: In April 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a reduction in clinical placement capacity that affected student learning opportunities. APPROACH: Based on Miller's pyramid of learning, a virtual placement was created using evidence-based learning theories and an array of multimedia technologies with the intention of replicating real-life experiences and promoting problem-based learning. Scenarios and case studies were collated from clinical experiences and mapped against student proficiencies to produce an authentic and immersive learning environment. CONCLUSION: This innovative pedagogy provides an alternative to the placement experience while enhancing the application of theory to practice.

From the Covid-19 health emergency entered our lives, the web continues to alleviate moments of isolation with ironic memes, photos and videos that, despite having been considered an irreverence to the masterpieces of Art and/or one of the many uses of irony to exorcise fear, they have favored the staging of video-graphic products with a strong ‘humor' component. Within these premises, in the context of graphic design, this paper will evaluate aspects as the analysis of fashion environment as expressive language of living indoor during Covid-19 pandemic;the audiovisual languages and compositional criteria for the creation and multimedia communication of a video-graphic spot on Stay at home communication campaign. ABSTRACT

Given the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated radical changes to the teaching landscape, employing digital learning platforms in the professional training of teachers has become imperative. The instructional design competencies are among the most important competencies for today's teachers. Therefore, it is necessary to test the effectiveness of digital learning platforms to provide teachers with the required competencies, both cognitive and practical, and to help them improve these competencies. Accordingly, in this study, we aimed to measure the effects of using the Google Classroom platform to develop instructional design competences and learning engagement among preservice teachers in Saudi Arabia. We used a quasi-experimental approach, with a one-group design (pre- and posttest) in this study, which included 61 female student teachers. Three measurement instruments were utilised, namely, the achievement test, the product evaluation card, and the learning engagement scale. The results of our study showed that using Google Classroom as a digital learning platform was effective in helping the preservice teachers acquire and develop their cognitive and practical competencies in instructional design. Our results further revealed high levels of learning engagement at cognitive, behavioural, and social levels among the preservice teachers who participated in learning instructional design through the Google Classroom platform. Our findings emphasise the need for greater investment in digital learning platforms to support preservice teachers' professional training, as these students can benefit from the potential these platforms offer in developing their instructional design competencies.

ABSTRACT

The Prime Ministerial Decree of 9 March 2020 has caused the spread of social campaigns (#corona-virus, #iorestoacasa), whose ‘pandemic' effect has influenced the collective imagination more than the COVID-19 virus which, spread all over the world, has changed everyone's life globally. In a hyper-technological era, this microscopic virus has shown that even evolved communities are fragile, questioning many false certainties. The society of the global image has reacted and, as a symbolic language, has responded with countless forms of visual and multimedia communication (magazines covers, cartoons, comics, video clips) to spread new messages on social networks or television channels: to stay home, to renounce social life, to use quarantine to rediscover forgotten activities. This contribution examines the topic from a social and graphic point of view, analyzing contexts and languages such as: the proliferation of photographic images of deserted cities, which have portrayed the same places with different eyes and effects;the manipulation of the iconic and/or rhetorical force of artistic masterpieces or cinematographic titles, reinterpreted according to inspirations due to coronavirus psychosis, or of well-known advertising brands to obtain ironic puns with an equally ‘viral' effect;the redesign of the logos of famous multinationals in the name of the rule of social distancing;the creation of video clips to analyze, through the now usual video call screen, problems and typical behavior of the quarantine. ABSTRACT

Multimedia pedagogy embodies the use of text materials, photography and other still images, audio files, video presentations and forms of animation, which are all excellent vehicles for Literature teaching. Prior to COVID-19, most lecturers in the selected universities had used multimedia to watch literature films but not to conduct entire lectures. After that pandemic, when schools reopened, the ODEL (Online Distance Education Learning) department's pleas to lecturers to continue with some online courses fell on deaf ears. This study undertook ethnographic research to establish the reasons for the apparent reluctance by both lecturers and students to interface using multimedia during creative writing classes. The observations and interview findings revealed that subject specifications and psychological factors influenced the lecturer and student more than the economic factors against the use of multimedia during lectures. The study recommended retooling teacher trainers in multimedia pedagogy because a person cannot effectively conduct online lectures unless taught how to. The study concluded that human beings are social beings drawn to learning using methods that involve close interaction between the teacher and the taught, and the elaborateness of literature with its genres consists of the teaching of intangible interactions between words and listener, demand for physical interface between teacher and teacher trainee to chisel and polish the genre specifications.

ABSTRACT

Traditional learning has faced major changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the necessity for innovative education methods. Virtual reality (VR) technology has the potential to change teaching and learning paradigms by providing a gamified, immersive, and engaging education. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of virtual reality in academic context by using a VR software instrument (called EduAssistant). The system's features such as virtual amphitheater, search by voice recognition, whiteboard, and a video conference system have fostered a sense of connection and community interaction. The study involved 117 students for VR experience, out of which 97 watched a pre-recorded video and 20 students used the VR headset, and an additional 20 students for traditional learning. The students who used the VR headset achieved a significantly higher mean quiz score of 8.31 compared to 7.55 for the traditional learning group with a two-tailed p-value of 0.0468. Over 80% of the total number of participants were satisfied (4 or 5 out of 5) with the experience and the confidence level when searching through voice recognition was over 90%. The study demonstrates that virtual reality is an excellent approach for changing conventional education. The research results, based on samples, simulations, and surveys, revealed a positive impact of VR and its gamification methods on the students' cognitive performance, engagement, and learning experience. Immersion provided by a virtual assistant tool helped to promote active and deep learning. Experiments based on EduAssistant features suggest that virtual reality is also an effective strategy for future research related to students with disabilities.
